Rockford Fosgate RFK4D is a 4-gauge dual amplifier complete wiring kit. It’s designed for amps with fuse ratings totaling up to 100 amperes. It comes with everything you’ll need to send power and signal to two amps and your speakers including two distribution blocks, 4-gauge power and ground cables, 8-gauge power and ground cables, speaker wire, two patch cables, a fuse holder, a 100-amp fuse, and few more extras.

This amp wiring kit seem to hit the sweet spot of a lot of guys, and that’s no coincidence. It’s very well made and it comes with most components required for a smooth amplifier installation.

This is another complete 4 gauge amp installation kit from InstallGear. As with all cheap amp wiring kits, the wires included in this InstallGear kit aren’t made of Oxygen free copper.

Instead of pure copper, most manufacturers out there opt for CCA (Copper Coated Aluminum) which is cheaper than copper. This justifies the lower price tag on these kits.

If you were to buy a similar kit such as this one at hand but with pure copper instead of CCA, you’d be looking at around 100 bucks, more or less.

CCA isn’t as good of a conductor for electrical current as copper is, but it gets the job done without costing an arm and a leg. So, unless you’re a serious audio audio enthusiasts who’s into SPL competition, CCA wires are just fine.

How to determine the best size wire for your amp’s power and ground

The cables and wires you use to hook up your amplifier to your car sound system are as important as choosing the right car amplifier.

To operate efficiently, an amplifier needs its power and ground wiring to be large enough to accommodate its demand for electrical current. Therefore, not any amp wiring kit will be suitable to work with any amplifier.

That said, understanding the needs of your system will help you narrow down the choices when choosing the best amp wiring kit.

1/0 gauge, 4 gauge and 8 gauge are the most common wire sizes in the market. Which of these to choose depends greatly on how much current your system will try to consume, and on how long the wiring run will be. Using the right wire gauge ensures your amp receives the amount of power it is designed for.

As a general recommendation, we usually follow the guidelines below as a quick reference in determining the appropriate wire gauge.

The formulas for calculating current draw

In order to calculate your amp’s current draw (in amperes), you must first calculate the total power of the system. Multiply the number of channels by the number of RMS watts per channel. For more complex systems running off multiple amps, you need to add up the total RMS power figures to arrive at a grand total.

Generally speaking, car amps come in two major classes — Class AB and Class D — each type of amplifier has its very own formula for calculating current draw. If you don’t know what Class your amplifier is, use the Class AB calculating formula for the safest result.

Class D Amps : Max Current Draw in Amperes = total RMS Wattage divided by 0.75 Amp Efficiency divided by 13.8 Volts

Class AB Amps : Max Current Draw in Amperes = total RMS Wattage divided by 0.50 Amp Efficiency divided by 13.8 Volts

  1. The formulas above will give you the approximate maximum current draw of your system.
  2. Compare the formula’s result to the numbers in the “Amperes” column in the chart below.
  3. Now figure out the cable length required to run the latter from your battery to the amplifier’s mounting location.
  4. Cross-reference these two figures in the chart below to determine which gauge of cable you need.
P.S: Note that the smaller the gauge number, the larger the wire. 1/0 (“one-aught”) is the common name for a 0-gauge wire; 2/0 (“two-aught”) for a 00-gauge wire.


Wire Size Chart


Let’s say you have a four channel class AB amplifier rated at 75 per channel.

The maximum current draw for this amp is [(75 x 4)/0.50)/13.8] = 43 Amperes.

So, for this scenario, we can use a 10 AWG wire kit, or step up to 8 AWG wire.


Let’s say you have a two channel class D amplifier rated at 100 per channel.

The maximum current draw for this amp is [(100 x 2)/0.75)/13.8] = 19 Amperes.

So, for this case, we can use a 12 AWG wire kit, or step up to 10 AWG wire.

What size speaker wire do I need?

Speaker wiring matters too. When you replace or run new speaker wiring, we recommend using:

  • 18-, 16-, or 14-gauge wires for speakers
  • 16-, 14-, or 12-gauge wires for subwoofers

Similarly to power wire, the more current you’re pushing through it and the longer its length, the larger size you should use. For example, if your amplifier is in the trunk and it’s pumping out more than 150 watts to your front speakers, 12-gauge speaker wire is a good call. But if the amp is only 50 to 100 watts, 16-gauge would be fine.

What Type of Amp Kit Do You Need?

Amplifier wiring kits come in various gauge configurations depending on the wattage of your sound system. They also come in two packages: a complete amplifier kit and a power kit.

Complete Amplifier Kits

A complete amplifier kits come with all the necessary components including speaker wire, power and ground wire, RCA cables, remote turn-on wire fuse holders, grommets and terminals to seamlessly hook up your amp to your sound system.

Power Kits

Power kits on the other hand come with everything you need to power your amplifier but they don’t come with any speaker wire or RCA connection cables. Power kits come with power and ground cables, turn-on lead wires, fuse and fuse holder as well as an assortment of wiring hardware and cable ties such as grommets, wiring terminals, connectors etc.

Do You Have Multiple Amplifiers in Your System?

If you’re building a complex sound system that consists of multiple amplifiers, you should consider a dual amp wiring kit that comes with dual fuses and distribution blocks.

Investing in a power distribution block will let you run several amps using just one single power wire from your battery.

To protect your system from any power spikes, it is of paramount importance that the fuse and fuse holder size are matched to your amp. It is also quite important that the fuse rating of your amp kit matches or slightly exceeds that of your amplifier.

Furthermore, if your system is powered by multiple amps wired together, and you want to figure out the necessary amperage of your fuses, just add the amperages of each amplifier together.

What makes a good amp wiring kit?

There are basically Four factors to consider while choosing the best amp wiring kit, they are:

Included items

As we’ve mentioned above, amp wiring kits come in two package: Complete all-inclusive kits and power kits. The difference between them is pretty self explanatory. The former contains everything required for a smooth amp installation, whilst the latter is lacking a few items such as speaker wire and RCA connection cables.

So, depending on your needs, you can choose the right amp wiring kit that’s convenient for your situation. Nevertheless, you need to anticipate having long enough wiring for your vehicle. Typically an 18 feet long cable should be more than enough to be run from the battery positive terminal and fuse holder to the amplifier in your trunk.

Similarly, the remote wire and RCA cables should be also long enough. I’d say around 16 feet should suffice for the most part. Long cables will let you easily move the amplifier to different mounting locations if necessary.

Wire quality

A thick wire isn’t always the best. Why? Well, simply because some manufacturers market their products as being larger than they actually are by wrapping their wires using oversized insulation to fool you into thinking that the wire is of top-notch quality. Stripping off that insulation will reveal thin wire conductors than what’s advertised.

Copper Vs. Copper Coated Aluminum Wire

Copper has a track record of rising aggressively the last couple of years. This has led many manufacturer to look for other cheaper alternatives.

One of the most used materials is Copper Coated Aluminum (also known as : CCA). It’s cheaper than Oxygen free copper. However, it isn’t as good of a conductor for electrical current as copper is, but for the average Joe, there isn’t much of a difference between the two materials.

Another drawback to Copper Coated Aluminum is that it’s less flexible to a degree than pure copper wire but that depends greatly on the brand quality to a certain extent.

Ring terminals

Some amp wiring kits come with ring terminals which come in handy in securing positive and negative wiring cables. Even the cheapest ring terminals will do the job just fine.

To secure the terminals you can use a high quality crimp tool or vise grip pliers after stripping around half an inch of insulation off the amp or speaker wire.

In addition to ring terminals, some manufacturers also include other fasteners in their wiring kits such as zip ties, crimp connectors, crimp lug …etc.

Quality Fuse Holder and Fuse

The fuse connects everything together and ensures that power gets to your amp. That said, a good fuse holder is a must.

Most low cost fuse holders found in many budget amp kits aren’t anything to write home about. They actually can get the job done, but the majority of them are below par. Some of them, especially molded fuse holders are only rated for smaller amps and can only be used with 10 gauge wiring.

With all of that being said, and if you’re serious about your setup, we highly recommend investing in an “AGU” or “ANL” fuse for the best results.

AGU and ANL fuses are constructed with a round glass body and terminated with metal end caps. Their see-through body provides a clear indication whether the fuse is blown or not.
