Best 6.5 Component Car Speakers Reviews

Unless you have a relatively late model vehicle shipped with a premium sound system, it’s highly unlikely that the factory speakers in your vehicle are up to the task of providing top-notch sound quality.

So, Whether your car speakers are starting to wear out due to age and use, or they weren’t ever that great to begin with, replacing them with a set of aftermarket speakers is one of the most budget-friendly ways to experience and enjoy a better overall sound quality in your car.

Component car speakers are the way to go if you’re looking for premium sound, much better soundstage and imaging. That said, let’s take a look at some of the best 6.5 component speakers on the market.

What are Component Car Speakers

Conventional coaxial speakers, whether factory-installed or aftermarket consist of the woofer and tweeter combined into speaker. It’s a convenient, easy way to get great sound from a single speaker opening, but the design of the woofer and tweeter are both compromised in this arrangement which leaves a lot to be desired. That’s the reason why we recommend component speaker systems for serious audiophiles.

Component car speakers on the other hand separate tweeters and woofers which allows for a better overall sound quality. They add in an extra component called the crossover which allows these two drivers to do their job better by limiting the frequency range each driver must accurately reproduce.

Component car speakers are a bit difficult to install than coaxial speakers, but once installed, you will be GUARANTEED years of enjoyment.

Kenwood KFC-P710PS speakers present 63Hz to 24 kHz frequency response and 86 dB sensitivity. The can handle up to 80 watts of power on continuous basis.

On the debit side, these speakers are a bit lacking in terms of sensitivity rating compared to the rivals. Sensitivity is an essential aspect to consider when purchasing car speakers. It measures how much sound a speaker yields from the power applied to it.

That said, if your car sound system is powered by a low-powered receiver (15 watts RMS per channel or less), speakers with high sensitivity ratings (over 90 dB) will make the best match. Otherwise, if you have a high-powered system powered by a powerful amplifier or aftermarket receiver, then consider speakers with lower sensitivity ratings such as these.

Here’s another great set of 6.5 component speakers from Alpine. These speakers are some of the most highly praised component speakers that Alpine have to offer. We’ve come across a ton of you who have used and loved these speakers.

If you like to play your music loud with very minimal distortion, These speakers are for you. Alpine have built their type-R speakers for people who like to turn it up.

The Alpine Type-R SPR-60C component system features 6-1/2″ multi-layer hybrid fiber woofers supported with Santoprene® rubber surround. These woofers will deliver great bass response. Alpine did a great job at adapting the specially ridged surround, originally developed for their subs, to these speakers, which allows for for consistent, extended cone movement that pushes more air.

It must be noted that the bass that these speakers can deliver isn’t by any means comparable to that of a subwoofer. Although the lows are not as prominent, they still kick hard, and would suit those of you looking for more subtle bass solution.

These speakers only begin to slightly struggle when faced with some really bass-heavy tracks. If you’re a basshead, I’m afraid that’s going to be an issue for you so it’s better to consider adding a subwoofer to your car sound system.

Additionally, these speakers are featured with 1″ silk dome tweeters which produce smooth, bright highs that will bring out your music’s detail and depth with no shrillness. These tweeters come with EQ ring which improves the tweeter’s dispersion characteristics, providing excellent off-axis response.

The Alpine SPR-60C speakers can handle up to 110 watts of power RMS. That’s a ton of power. So, it’s better to hook them up to an external amplifier.

As for the downsides, it’s really difficult to think of any. If anything, I’d say that these speakers’ sensitivity rating of 88dB is slightly low compared to most 6.5 component speakers we listed here.

Anatomy of a component speaker

Tweeters for the highs : Tweeters are meant to handle and reproduce the upper frequencies in your music such as vocals, guitars, horns and other high notes that make the music sparkle. They play a major role in making your music sounds as if it’s coming from all around you, rather than from your car doors or rear deck. That said, it’s highly recommended that you mount the tweeters as close to your ear level as possible. However, the tweeters should not be mounted far away from the woofers so that the different frequencies don’t reach your ears at different times.

Crossovers hide away : A crossover is an electronic device which acts as a traffic cop for the audio frequencies coming from your amp or headunit. Crossovers ensure that frequencies below a fixed point (lows) go to the woofers, and those above (highs) go to the tweeters. These small electronic devices can be mounted securely wherever there’s space in your doors or dash.

Woofers go down low : They’re meant to handle low frequencies such as notes from drums, a bass guitar or a tuba. They are usually mounted in your vehicle’s factory locations.

The 3 Major Benefits of Component Speakers

1- Better sound clarity

Thanks to the crossovers which split up the audio signal into two or more frequency ranges, so that the signals can be sent to the most suitable driver, the woofers and the tweeters are freed up to do more for their assigned frequencies. Well-built crossovers prevent each speaker from stretching to play frequencies it wasn’t really meant to handle, resulting in crisp, clear sound output.

2- Better sound stage

The best thing about component speakers is that you can mount each driver separately which allows for better sound-staging. Think about it. By mounting the tweeters in the dash, A-pillars, or sail panels of your car, you’re raising the stage, which means your music will sound as if it’s coming from all around rather than from one single location. This puts you one step closer to a more authentic audio experience.

3- Better imaging

Obviously, component speakers are built with high quality materials. Combine that with their raised soundstage, tonal clarity frequency separation, and you get more accurate imaging.

Why should you use an amp to power component speakers

Undoubtedly, component car speakers are designed to handle higher amounts of power than their coaxial speaker counterparts. They’ll do pretty well running off an aftermarket headunit, but they’ll really come into their own when powered by an outboard amplifier.

If you don’t intend to add an external amplifier, then make sure the component speakers you would like to use have a high sensitivity rating and are rated to perform well on just stereo power.
